Brentford vs Sunderland Highlights & Replay

The stage was set for a high-stakes Premier League encounter, with both sides looking to dictate the flow of play in a tactical battle. This match, held on September 5, 2026, became a defining moment of the season, characterized by narrow margins and game-changing VAR decisions.

Early exchanges and VAR frustration

Sunderland started the match with intent, coming close to breaking the deadlock in the 8th minute when Daniel Ballard found the net. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out following a VAR check for offside. The Brentford defense held firm, and despite a tense moment where the visitors looked for a penalty, the referee remained unmoved after consultation, keeping the contest scoreless as the teams headed to the break.

Second half drama

The intensity escalated in the second half. Brentford thought they had snatched the lead in the 57th minute through a clinical volley from Vitaly Janelt, but again, the referee was called to the monitor, and the goal was chalked off due to a foul earlier in the sequence. The decisive moment finally arrived in the 80th minute. Keane Lewis-Potter was adjudged to have pulled Wilson Isidor back inside the box, resulting in a penalty. Enzo Le Fee stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home. Despite late pressure and waves of attacks from Brentford in stoppage time, the Sunderland backline stood tall, securing the victory in front of a crowd of 17,131.
